How to encourage kids to be more creative (and why its important)

How to encourage kids to be more creative (and why its important)

Creativity is a valuable skill that can bring joy, excitement, curiosity and a love of innovation to a child's life. Whether it's through art, music, writing, or any other form of self-expression, tapping into their creativity can help children build self-confidence and develop important life skills.

Working on creative projects can also help kids express their emotions - sometimes its just easer to draw it out than find the right words. Being creative also shows us that we are all different in the way we see things and that experimenting and learning are part of life and not being afraid to give it a go is a great skill for kids to learn.

Here are some tips for inspiring kids to be more creative:

  1. Make it easy: Give kids access to a variety of materials that they can use to express themselves creatively. This can be anything from paints, pencils, and paper, to fabrics, beads, and clay. It doesn't have to be messy, complicated or expensive.
  2. Encourage them to experiment: Encourage kids to experiment with different materials and techniques. There are lots of teachers sharing projects online and on social media which may give you ideas for projects your little ones can do at home.
  3. Give them time: Set aside time each day or week for creative play. This can be a designated "art time" or simply allowing them to spend time with their favourite materials.
  4. Show interest: Kids love to create things for their important people! Take an interest in what your child is creating and ask questions about their process and thoughts. This will show that you value their creativity.
  5. Be a role model: Children often look up to adults as role models, so show your own creativity by engaging in creative activities alongside them. This can be as simple as drawing a picture or writing a story together. I love sewing projects - as you may have seen on the Insta!
  6. Praise their effort: Acknowledge and celebrate your child's creative accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. This will give them a sense of pride and boost their self-esteem. I always give my kids feedback on their artwork - I'm not brutal but I tell them what I love and I ask them what they think they need to work on.

Encouraging creativity in kids is so beneficial for them!  Loads of fun too! By providing the right materials, encouraging exploration, giving them time, you can help your child tap into their creative potential and foster a lifelong love of self-expression and learning.
